Flexography (briefly flexo) Printing is a printing technique done with a flexible printing plate (flex). Flexo printing is a high-pressure printing technique similar to letterpress printing. In this printing method, the job to be printed is at a certain height from the body of the plate. The plate (cliché) is flexible, allowing it to be easily bent. In this printing technique, the plate is mounted on the plate cylinder (with double-sided tape). The ink reservoir delivers ink to the anilox (engraved) roller. The anilox roller makes contact with the raised areas, picking up ink. The image is transferred onto the substrate passing between the plate cylinder and the impression cylinder.
What sets flexo printing apart from other high-pressure systems is the use of low-viscosity inks suitable for water and solvent-based materials, rapid drying inks, and the ability to achieve consistent quality from the first to the last print (1-5 million prints) using rubber and photopolymer plates. Only a soft-surfaced plate can produce satisfactory results on rough-surfaced printing materials. The use of water and solvent-based inks that evaporate quickly allows for problem-free printing on a wide range of surfaces, making it a significant advantage compared to other systems. Additionally, the advantage of not requiring the crushing and softening of the ink due to its thin consistency is another benefit. Gradients and halftones in flexo printing are achieved by adjusting the size of the dots.
